The project aims to replace the dangerously deteriorating roofs of the main building and crèche at CRCH, a safe haven for up to 50 abused, abandoned, and neglected children aged from birth to 5.5 years. The existing roofs-one made of brittle asbestos cement sheets over 75 years old, and another metal roof over 40 years old with rust and holes-pose serious health and safety risks.
Asbestos exposure is particularly dangerous for young children, whose developing lungs are highly susceptible to airborne fibres that can cause long-term respiratory illnesses, including asbestosis and cancer. The presence of asbestos, combined with ongoing roof leaks and structural weaknesses, compromises both air quality and building safety, threatening the well-being of children and staff.
The main objectives are to:
i) Safely remove and dispose of the asbestos roof sheets;
ii) Vacuum and seal ceiling boards to eliminate any asbestos contamination;
iii) Install new, compliant, and durable roofing materials; and
iv) Reinstall the existing solar panels to maintain energy efficiency.
This project will ensure a safe, healthy, and structurally sound environment for vulnerable young children and the staff who care for them. A new roof will protect them from toxic exposure, water leaks, and collapsing structures-allowing CRCH to continue providing love, protection, and early childhood development in a safe, nurturing space.
