The project aims at providing the basic water facilities required in the Ugbodu community market and environs in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria under District 9141. The scope includes drilling and provision of solar-powered borehole with concomitant water reticulation system; stations, surface tanks and distribution outlets and taps for the inhabitants of these communities. A needs assessment was carried out in the community and it was ascertained that the Ugbodu community market, which is the hub of activities is in dire need of modern water treatment plant to make potable water available to save man hours spent in trekking long distances to their water source: OHE RIVER and brooks in search of water which is unsafe for drinking. The women and children go through difficult terrains and situations to get access to clean water for their daily needs, which is about 10km from the town centre increasing the chances of hazards to themselves. Water is life; thus, provision of water borehole would prevent the people from water borne diseases, enhance community development, encourage good sanitation habits/practices and empower the community through the various means of utilizing water.
This justifies the need for the project to be undertaken at the Ugbodu community with a population of 17,000 inhabitants. About 86% of the members of the community do not have access to potable water. This project is designed to provide a water borehole that will serve the community and its environs.
This project scope will cover provision of 2000 gallons elevated UPVC tanks on a steel stanchion, structural steel works with pipeline reticulation within the community Centre. As well as drilling an industrial borehole to reach the aquifer. The people of Ugbodu Community and environs will be the beneficiaries of the Water Borehole project. The need being addressed is to provide potable water for Ugbodu community market to enhance the well-being of the people and by extension prevent water borne diseases; uplift their economic life. It is expected that thousands of persons shall be benefitting from this project monthly. The Rotary Club of Asaba will work with the community leaders to ensure that the facility when completed will be safeguarded and maintained, and that the people continue to derive the benefits of this humanitarian project in their community.
Head of the community and leaders would be held accountable to ensure that the desired project goals are accomplished, and any operational handicaps are brought to the notice of the representative of the host Rotary Club.
