2. Executive Summary
Blood banks in Pune frequently grapple with acute shortages, particularly during summer months (Aprilâ₀"June) and festive seasons (Diwali, Pitru Paksha) when voluntary donations drop while demand remains high for surgeries, trauma cases and thalassemia patients.
Key Blood Requirements and Shortfall Data in Pune
â₀¢ Daily Demand: The city requires a constant, high supply of blood, with demand sometimes reaching 1,000 to 1,200 units per day.
â₀¢ Shortage Status (Late 2024â₀"2025): As of Nov 2025, blood banks faced their worst shortage in two years, with donor turnout falling drastically below required levels.
â₀¢ Platelet Shortage: An acute shortage of platelets has been reported, severely affecting dengue treatment.
â₀¢ Stock Levels: During shortage periods, major banks often have only 1â₀"3 days of stock remaining, falling below the recommended 10-day buffer.
â₀¢ Regional Imbalance: While some months see high, surplus, donations, other periods create a massive gap where only 10â₀"15 donors turn up per camp.
Factors Contributing to the Shortfall
â₀¢ Seasonality: Summer vacations, heat waves, and Diwali holidays significantly reduce voluntary donation camps.
â₀¢ High Demand: Rising numbers of dengue patients and scheduled surgeries, particularly post-COVID, have increased the pressure on blood stocks.
â₀¢ Regulatory Restrictions: At times, restrictions on inter-state blood transfers can exacerbate the shortage, forcing local reliance.
This Global Grant project proposes procurement of a fully equipped Mobile Blood Collection and Donation Ambulance to conduct regular blood donation camps across Pune Dist and surrounding areas.
Blood shortages remain a major challenge for hospitals, especially for emergency surgeries, trauma care, maternal care, and treatment of thalassemia patients.
The proposed mobile unit will enable organized blood donation drives in:
1. Educational Institutions, Colleges and universities
2. Industrial establishments
3. Rural communities
4. Public institutions
5. Social organizations
6. Housing Societies
The ambulance will be operated and maintained by Shwas Foundations in Pune with medical supervision from licensed blood banks.
The project will be funded through:
Contribution from Rotary Club of Poona Midtown, District Designated Funds (DDF) from Rotary District 3131 and Contributions from international partner clubs and districts Matched by Rotary International.
The mobile blood collection unit is expected to facilitate 3,000â₀"5,000 blood units annually, benefiting thousands of patients.
3. Community Needs Assessment
Hospitals frequently face shortages of blood due to:
â₀¢ Limited access to blood banks
â₀¢ Insufficient voluntary donors
â₀¢ Lack of regular donation camps
â₀¢ Transportation challenges for donors
Mobile blood collection vans have proven to significantly increase voluntary blood donation by bringing facilities closer to communities.
This project will address these challenges by deploying a dedicated blood collection vehicle covering Pune Dist and nearby rural areas.
4. Project Objectives
1. Increase voluntary blood donation.
2. Improve accessibility to blood collection services.
3. Conduct regular blood donation camps.
4. Support hospitals and blood banks with adequate blood supply.
5. Promote community awareness about blood donation.
. Conclusion
The proposed Mobile Blood Collection & Donation Ambulance will significantly improve blood availability and strengthen emergency healthcare services in Pune and surrounding regions.
Through collaboration between Rotary Club of Poona Midtown, Rotary District 3131, international Rotary partners, and Shwas Foundations, this project will create a sustainable and life-saving community healthcare initiative.
Support from The Rotary Foundation Global Grant program will enable the successful implementation of this vital service.
