Bharati Village, located in Bhumlu Rural Municipality (Ward No. 1), Kavrepalanchok District, Nepal, faces an acute drinking water crisis. A community of 150 households (510 residents) struggles daily with extreme water scarcity, receiving barely 50 liters of water per household every three daysâ€"translating to less than 3.3 liters per person per day.

Furthermore, local women bear the primary burden, walking 2 to 4 hours daily over difficult terrain to fetch water from an unprotected, polluted open spring source located 3.5 km away. Contaminated with animal and monkey waste, this water poses severe health risks and exposes the community to recurring waterborne diseases.

This project delivers a permanent solution through a complete gravity-fed water supply networkâ€"spanning a 3.5 km transmission pipeline and a 5.0 km distribution networkâ€"paired with multi-stage storage/filtration, 150 private household tap connections, and localized WASH and basic plumbing training.

1. Identified Needs

Critical Water Scarcity: 150 households (510 residents) receive less than 3.3 liters per person per day (50L per household every three days), far below the WHO emergency benchmark of 15â€"20 liters per day.

Severe Health Risks: The primary open spring is unprotected and contaminated with animal and monkey waste, causing recurring waterborne diseases (diarrhea, dysentery, parasitic infections).

Extreme Burden on Women & Girls: Local women spend 2 to 4 hours daily trekking across 3.5 km of steep mountain terrain to collect unclean water, losing time for education, economic activities, and family care.

Lack of Technical Infrastructure & Capacity: The community lacks storage reservoirs, multi-stage filtration, piped distribution networks, and local skilled caretakers to maintain water systems.

2. How the Project Meets These Needs

Sustained Water Availability: Builds a 50,000L main collection reservoir fed by a 3.5 km gravity transmission pipeline, providing continuous water access directly to 150 private household tap stands.

Safe, Contaminant-Free Water: Installs an intake capture chamber, a 500L source tank, a 1,000L sedimentation tank, and an integrated multi-stage sand/gravel filtration system to eliminate biological pathogens and sediment.

Gender Empowerment & Safety: Direct household tap connections reduce the daily 3.5 km water retrieval trek to zero hours, freeing time for women and enabling girls to attend school regularly.

Community Capacity & Ownership: Delivers community WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) workshops and hands-on plumbing vocational training to local caretakers for long-term self-reliance.

3. Project Implementation Timeline (10-Month Implementation)

Community Mobilization & Technical Baseline

Month 1:Form local Water User Committee (WUC)

Material Procurement & Civil Works Construction

Months 5â€"6 :Procure heavy-duty HDPE pipes and civil materials; construct intake spring capture chamber, 500L source tank, 1,000L sedimentation tank, and 50,000L reservoir with filtration media.

Pipe Laying & Household Tap Installation

Months 1â€"3 :Excavate 8.5 km (8,500m) of mountain trenches; lay transmission (3.5 km) and distribution (5.0 km) pipelines; construct 150 individual household tap stands with concrete pads and valves.

Capacity Building, Testing & Official Handover

Month 1-2 :Conduct WASH hygiene workshops and basic plumbing vocational training; perform hydrostatic pressure and water purity testing; officially hand over system management to WUC.

4. Club Member Involvement

Club members will participate actively across all project stages to ensure strong oversight, transparency, and community integration:

Project Oversight & Procurement: Club members will review supplier quotes, monitor HDPE pipe quality standards, and verify material deliveries to the project site.

On-Site Field Monitoring Visits: Rotary/Club representatives will conduct scheduled field visits during intake construction (Month 2), pipeline trenching (Month 4), and final system testing (Month 6).

Training & Community Engagement: Members will co-facilitate the inauguration of WASH workshops and participate in the graduation ceremony for local caretaker plumbers.

Financial Management & Reporting: Club treasurers and project leads will manage fund disbursements tied to milestone completions, maintain ledger records, and compile final audit reports for stakeholders.
