Momoniat Sub-County Hospital serves as a referral facility for five surrounding dispensaries and plays a critical role in providing maternal and newborn healthcare services to the communities they serve. A needs assessment has identified gaps in maternity equipment at the hospital and the five dispensaries, as well as limited capacity for emergency stabilization and transportation of mothers requiring urgent referral.
The project will strengthen the maternal healthcare referral system by fully equipping the maternity wing at Momoniat Sub-County Hospital with essential equipment for safe deliveries, emergency obstetric care, newborn resuscitation, monitoring, and postnatal care. The five linked dispensaries will each receive basic maternity equipment that will enable healthcare workers to identify and stabilize mothers and newborns before referral to the hospital.
The project will also provide a dedicated ambulance for Momoniat Sub-County Hospital. This will enable timely collection of emergency cases from the five dispensaries and facilitate safe transfer of patients who require a higher level of care.
Project funds will be used primarily for the procurement and installation of maternity and newborn equipment for the hospital, essential stabilization equipment for the five dispensaries, acquisition and equipping of the ambulance, and related training (EMoC & MPDSR), mentorship, and project monitoring activities.
The project is expected to be implemented over 18 months. The initial phase will focus on procurement and preparation, followed by delivery and installation of equipment, ambulance acquisition, healthcare worker training, and implementation. The final phase will focus on monitoring, mentorship, evaluation, and ensuring that the strengthened services are fully integrated into routine healthcare delivery.
Rotary club members will play an active role throughout the project. Club members will participate in project planning and oversight, procurement monitoring, stakeholder engagement, equipment handover, site visits, and monitoring of project outcomes. The Rotary team will work closely with Momoniat Sub-County Hospital, the five dispensaries, county health authorities, and the international Rotary partner to ensure transparency, accountability, and sustainability.
The project will create a stronger maternal referral network linking five dispensaries to one well-equipped referral hospital, helping ensure that mothers receive the right care at the right time and reducing preventable delays in emergency maternal and newborn care.
