The project seeks to strengthen facility based maternal care through infrastructure, skills and Government partnership in one of the country’s most geographically isolated regions (Orus Community, Tangelbei Division, Tiaty East Sub-County, Baringo County, Kenya). The needs assessment found that approximately 67% of women in this community deliver at home, often assisted by untrained traditional birth attendants leading to low mortality rates. MAMA CBO centre whom we have partnered with is the only functional maternal facility within ~50kms and strengthening their infrastructure and skills will lead to safe births and higher mortality rates. The project will cost approximately USD 56,900 (Kes. 7,400,000) over the span of 2 years and funds will be used to provide technial infratsructure and knowledge transfer to address the below.
Maternal & Child Health:
1. Reduce maternal, newborn and under-5 mortality rates.
2. Increase access to quality pre-natal, delivery and postnatal care (including skilled birth attendance).
3. Improve newborn care (neonatal resuscitation, thermal care, kangaroo mother care).
4. Improve maternal and child nutrition (including breastfeeding support).
5. Strengthen health systems and local capacity (training health workers).
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH):
1. Increase access to safe, reliable drinking water sources.
2. Improve access to adequate, sustainable sanitation facilities (public).
3. Promote and sustain good hygiene practices.
4. Integrate WASH into the maternal facility and the wider community.
5. Ensure equitable access for vulnerable and marginalized groups (women, children & the local community).
6. Promote water resource protection, conservation and sustainable management.
