Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Argentina

Location: Santiago del Estero

Total Budget: $31,452

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

CEPSI Eva Perón Children’s Hospital is the principal public pediatric referral hospital in the Province of Santiago del Estero, Argentina. Its Pediatric Burn Unit provides specialized treatment to children and young adolescents with burn injuries, including patients from vulnerable families and rural or geographically distant communities.

Between May 2020 and March 2026, the Pediatric Burn Unit treated 3,782 pediatric burn patients and performed 8,934 wound-care procedures. During this period, 757 patients required surgical procedures involving the use of a manual knife dermatome. The Unit currently does not have a specialized pediatric dermatome and must rely on manual techniques for procedures that would benefit from modern dermatome technology.

Global Grant GG2697055 seeks to acquire a Humeca D42 Pediatric Dermatome, together with the initial blades and accessories required for its use, and to provide technical training for the medical professionals who will operate the equipment. The dermatome will allow more precise skin graft harvesting, improve surgical efficiency, reduce complications, shorten recovery times, and contribute to better functional and long-term outcomes for children with severe burns.

The current estimated project budget is USD 31,452. Project funds will be used for the Humeca D42 Pediatric Dermatome, initial blades and accessories, technical training, and associated administrative and banking expenses.

The Government of the Province of Santiago del Estero has committed to contribute 50% of the cost of the dermatome, and Rotary District 4845 has committed USD 2,000 toward the project. Rotary Club Autonomía, District 4851, is currently working with its international Rotary partners to complete the financial structure required for formal submission of GG2697055 to The Rotary Foundation.

Rotary Club Autonomía will participate in the coordination, implementation, financial oversight, and monitoring of the project in cooperation with the participating Rotary clubs and districts, CEPSI Eva Perón Children’s Hospital, and the provincial health authorities. Once funding is completed and the Global Grant is approved, the project will proceed with the acquisition of the equipment, technical training, implementation, and follow-up.

Additional Rotary clubs and districts are invited to participate through financial contributions, sharing the project within their Rotary networks, and helping identify additional partners and funding opportunities.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
