Project Description
Shree Madhyamik Secondary School, located in the remote area of Limpatar, Katari Municipalityâ"09, Udayapur District, Nepal, serves 350 students (188 female and 162 male) from Early Childhood Development (ECD) to Grade 12, supported by 16 teachers (8 female and 8 male). During the project assessment, a critical need was identified: the school does not have any functional toilet facilities. The previous toilet structure was dismantled due to safety concerns, leaving students and teachers dependent on a nearby health office toilet or, in some cases, using surrounding bushes.
The lack of proper sanitation facilities has created serious challenges related to health, hygiene, privacy, safety, and dignity. The impact is particularly significant for adolescent girls who require safe menstrual hygiene facilities, younger students, and students with disabilities who need accessible sanitation infrastructure.
To address these identified needs, the project will construct a gender-segregated and disability-friendly Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) toilet facility equipped with sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene systems. The proposed facility will include:
Girlsâ toilet block with 8 toilet rooms and 1 disability-friendly toilet.
Boysâ toilet block with 4 toilet rooms, 4 urinals, and 1 disability-friendly toilet.
Six handwashing stations within the school premises.
1,000-liter overhead water tank with internal plumbing.
Self-flushing system for regular toilets.
Automatic flushing system for disability-friendly toilets.
Septic tank and wastewater management system.
Sanitary pad disposal facility with incinerator.
Menstrual hygiene management facilities and awareness programs.
In addition to infrastructure development, the project will include Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) education and menstrual hygiene training for students, teachers, and the School Management Committee. These activities will promote proper handwashing practices, safe toilet use, personal hygiene, environmental cleanliness, and sustainable operation of the facilities.
Use of Project Funds
Project funds will be utilized for:
Technical survey, design, and engineering supervision.
Construction of RCC toilet building.
Procurement of construction materials including cement, steel, bricks, aggregates, and finishing materials.
Plumbing works and installation of water supply systems.
Installation of toilet fixtures, urinals, and flushing systems.
Construction of septic tank and wastewater management facilities.
Installation of 1,000-liter water storage tank.
Construction of six handwashing stations.
Installation of sanitary pad disposal/incineration facilities.
WASH and menstrual hygiene training materials and activities.
Monitoring, quality control, and project documentation.
Project Timeline
The project is expected to be completed within approximately six months after approval and availability of funds.
Month 1:
Final technical assessment.
Design approval.
Procurement planning.
Community and school coordination.
Months 2â"5:
Construction of RCC toilet building.
Installation of plumbing, water tank, septic system, handwashing stations, and sanitation facilities.
Installation of disability-friendly features and sanitary pad disposal system.
Month 5â"6:
WASH and menstrual hygiene training.
Quality inspection.
Final testing of water, flushing, and sanitation systems.
Handover of completed facilities to the school.
Club Member Involvement
Members of the Rotary Club of Dhulikhel Shikhalapur will actively participate throughout the project cycle. Their involvement will include:
Conducting project planning and coordination with the school, community, and local government.
Supporting needs assessment and project monitoring.
Ensuring transparency and accountability in fund utilization.
Coordinating technical supervision and quality assurance.
Visiting the project site during construction.
Supporting WASH education and awareness activities.
Facilitating communication between donors, partners, school authorities, and local stakeholders.
Participating in project completion, handover, and sustainability monitoring.
The Rotary Club will work closely with Shree Madhyamik Secondary School, the School Management Committee, Katari Municipality, and community members to ensure that the facilities are properly used, maintained, and sustained for future generations of students.
This project will provide a long-term solution to a critical sanitation challenge and create a safer, healthier, and more inclusive learning environment for children in this remote community.
