PREAMBLE
The Indian constitution provides for free education to school going children. The literacy rate in children has been very low in the past and after the advent of independence, the Government took many measures to improve the situation. However lacks of constraint have been very big impediments in successful implementation of this constitutional obligation so far.
INTRODUCTION
The School program was taken up in a big way by the Government and almost all localities now have the basic facility. However, lack of proper environment for the young children in the make shift school premises goes counterproductive to the otherwise noble but necessary program. Most of the schools are devoid of proper classrooms, school desks for the students, and other necessary facilities.
The Rotary International District 3040 has 83 clubs and it is proposed that each Rotary Club in the District will adopt at least one school in its area and provide suitable classroom furniture to this School. The Clubs in their discretion may select more than one school within their limits.
The Project proposal envisages providing 50 to 100 student desk in each selected school. Each desk will accommodate three students. The desk will provide sitting bench and slanting desk where the students can keep their workbook to facilitate writing. The 100 desks will be sufficient for 6 to 8 classrooms, each room catering to the needs of approximately 40 students (each classroom will be provided with 14 desks depending on requirement). The desk will be provided for students of 5th to 12th standard classes.
TYPE OF DESKS
The desk will be standardized and got manufactured according to the design and specifications prepared for this purpose with the help and guidance of experts in the field.
The desk provided will be steel tubular structure with wooden top with sun mica finish. It will also have a provision for a drawer where the student can keep his belongings and study books. The steel structure will require minimum of maintenance and the desk will last for at least 10 years. The sitting bench will also have a wooden top for convenience in sitting for long hours in a class.
ROLE OF ROTARIANS
The Rotarians of the cosponsoring clubs will first asses the requirement in the selected school and then procure and supply the desks and monitor the final use of the desks and look after the maintenance of the desks in the coming years too.
COST INVOLVED
Each desk will cost Rs. 2500.00. Thus the requirement for providing 3000 desks in a school will be Rs. 75, 00,000.00 in addition to management and administrative cost of the project Rs 135000.00 . Total Cost of Project is Rs. 7635000.00 (approximately $ 142,500.00)
