Project Description

Region: Western Europe

Country: UK

Location: Oxford

Total Budget: $30,500

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Marcelo Ostria has been interviewed by the D-5790's Global Ambassadorial Scholarship Committee on 6 April 2013 and has been awarded one of D-5790's Scholarships in the amount of $30,250, subject to the approval of a Global Grant application. Marcelo has been accepted by Oxford University for studies to begin in October, 2013.

Marcelo Ostria would pursue a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Comparative Social Policy

within the Department of Social Policy and Intervention (DSPI). In harmony with the Future Vision goal of establishing goodwill and peace through poverty alleviation, this program will facilitate the opportunity to study and compare global policy models related to child labor, poverty, and development. The curriculum will lead him to develope a practical thesis addressing the limitations of relative and absolute measurements of child-based poverty, with the goal of providing non-for-profits and governments in the region precise

indicators to help establish more effective programs to reduce child poverty and improve well-being.

Moreover, a new perspective on more effective indicators would provide insight not just on quantitative measures of poverty, but on qualitative measures as well. That will allow him to identify and plan a pragmatic and sustainable poverty-alleviation project.
