The La Jolla Sunrise Rotary Club for their Gift of Life Project in 2013-14 has decided to support a project that will provide a new Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (CCL)to be located in the Pediatric Cardiac Center at Bustamante Hospital, Kingston, Jamaica. Jamaica has a population of approximately 2.6 million people with 45,000 live births per year. Based on WHO statistics , Jamaica has nearly 350 children born each year with congenital heart disease (CHD). With the addition of population statistics from District 7020, this will increase. The cost burden to the country and the family with untreated CHD is devastating. 10% die during the first year of life. The remaining live between 10-30 years, frequently sick, debilitated and requiring multiple hospitalizations. The main hindrance is lack of space to treat these children.A large scale project is now underway to build a new 10 bed Intensive Care unit. operating room, and CCL. The groundbreaking for the construction of this Pediatric Cardiac Center took place in February 2013 and the construction is fully funded. The addition of a CCL will add the first Pediatric dedicated CCL in the country. Training of local physicians, nurses and Biomed training has been ongoing for over 8 years. This team has been treating a limited amount of children independently and successfully for 4 years. Visitng Medical Teams from the U.K. and USA have been ongoing for the last 10 years. The CCL is expected to be fully operational by November 1, 2014.This project has already been accepted by The Rotary Foundation and it has received the maximum TRF match of $200,000. We have pledged $50,000 and cannot receive any TRF funding. We have now raised $11,000 towards our goal.

The $ 1.2 million Global Grant has been submitted to TRF for review and final approval.

A site visit from a TRF Team will occur in February. Rotarians will be present for this visit from both the Host and International club.

There will be a visit of the surrounding area, meetings at the hospital with board members, the medical team, Ministry officials and one of our major sponsors-Chain of Hope. Rotarians will be there throughout the entire process.

At dinner-a large gathering of Rotarians, Physicians, Stakeholders, Hospital Administrators, Nurses, and Politicians. We want to impress upon TRF how many people are involved in this $1.2 million dollar project.

7.A report will be compiled by the TRF Team Member, and submitted to the TRF board of trustees for final approval.

Good News on the Bustamente Grant. The visitor analysis from TRF has been done. Approval was sought to have the grant reviewed by the Trustees via correspondence, in advance of their June meeting. We explained to them the strong desire to start this project as soon as possible. The Trustees have agreed to this special request, and will be proceeding accordingly. As such, we will have a decision on the grant in the coming weeks, well in advance of the June Trustees meeting.

We contributed to a 2 million project which was authored by a club in Florida. It has already been approved and the money has been paid out by the Rotary Foundation. The project is for a Cath lab at Bustamente Hospital in Jamaica and the building which was donated is still not complete. Estimates are that the lab should be operational by July or August at which time surgeries can begin.

16-Sep-15

by Estelle Ebert

The primary International contact is Heidi Hess of the Ybor City, Florida Rotary Club. The reporting is being done by her. We are a contributing club and district. The Cath lab which this project supports is still being constructed and we will receive updates as to when it will be completed.

2-May-16

by Estelle Ebert

The construction of the new pediatric cardiac unit has been delayed for nearly two years due to numerous issues (funding, work stoppages) but is now on course to be complete by April 30, 2016.

o Cath lab and all equipment will be installed by August 2016

o Children will be treated in the new unit starting August 2016

Of the 24 surgeries, 6 have been successfully completed in the ICU.

6-Dec-16

by Estelle Ebert

The cath lab has been completed and the purchase agreement for the equipment was signed at the end of November. Manufacturing , shipping, delivery and installation should take about 6 months. In the interim surgeries are still proceeding at the hospital.
