Background
The Boca del Rio Costa de Oro Rotary Club has supported with its own resources the development of a public elementary school in the urban area. Part of this support has been the development of its Library.
With that experience and the hope of getting support of an international partner through a matching grant, we seek a more ambitious goal:
Project of Libraries Development in the public elementary schools in the neighboring municipalities of Veracruz.
Organization
We selected a committee of four members with the right profile.
The project manager, Director of Library Services Unit of the Veracruzana University, two entrepreneurs in industrial processes and an architect.
Planning
We designed a survey form for schools to know the available equipment, lighting, ventilation and the description of potential areas for libraries.
We asked for help to state and local authorities for selecting schools beneficiaries.
Execution
11 schools were visited and surveyed by members of the committee.
With that information we made our
Diagnosis:
Schools have a little collection of books, in addition, it is not classified and is out of reach of children.
The spaces available to library have a lack of privacy, and inadequate lighting and ventilation.
Principals and teachers, administer empirically the book collection.
Strategy
With this diagnosis, we made a list of needs, defined spaces for libraries and sought training for school principals and teachers, as well as school parents.
Schools need:
More books.
Adequate shelving for children's libraries.
Computer System to classify, label, set up a library loan system and title search.
Spaces redesigned to accommodate libraries with adequate lighting and ventilation,
Parents and teachers trained to administer and monitor long-term library.
In brief; books, redesigning spaces, equipment and training.
Finally, we sought reliable suppliers of the best books and equipment for the project.
Objetics
We seek to benefit 2200 children each year, in 11 elementary schools, at 3 different suburban municipalities.
