The RC Ensenada plans to improve the equipment of the laboratory of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of La Plata, Professor of Applied Pharmacology, which is investigated to find new drugs for the treatment of Chagas disease in its various stages.
Chagas disease is an endemic disease caused by Trypanosoma cruzi and suffered by about 13 million people, of which 25 to 30% are chronic patients who suffer irreversible heart damage caused 14000 deaths annually (Seventeenth Report of the UNICEF Programme , 2005). A group of researchers linked to our club, one of them former Rotary Foundation Fellow - have found that treatment of the disease in the acute period is based on drugs that have serious limitations, including variable effectiveness and side effects and toxicity. For the treatment of this disease are only a few drugs effective against the disease in its acute stage, being almost ineffective in treating the chronic phase.
The search for new drugs, researchers through our community and surrounding areas is a priority in public health. Studies are currently underway to obtain chemical substances with potential antiprotozoal properties against Trypanosoma brucei, Trypanosoma congolense, Trypanosoma cruzi with promising results.
To carry out this project will need to purchase various equipment to install the laboratory incubators, laminar flow bench, bath with and without agitation, refrigerator, freezer, microwave, microscope, chromatograph, Pasteur oven, magnetic stirrer, spectrophotometer, analytical balance, magnifying glass, computer, printer, scanner, books, equipment for carrying out histological, echocardiograph.
The cost is about U $ S 180,000
