Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Nigeria

Location: Umueze Anam

Total Budget: $75,313

Area of Focus: Maternal and child health

This project consists of the construction of Health centre in a selected community which in this case is Umueze Anam in Anambra |West Local Government area of Anambra State South East Nigeria. The community is riverine situated at the peninsula bounded by River Niger in the west, Anambra River in the South East and Ezichi River in the East, the population of the Local Government Area is about 102,000 spread through the nine autonomous communities that constitute the area. The entire landmark is usually covered by flood during the rainy season thereby making transportation through the area difficult. There is no functional health centre in the Local Government Area thereby making access to health care difficult if not impossible, this is the reason why the Local Government Area has the highest rate of Martenal and Child Mortality rate in the state. The closest hospital to the area is in Onitsha a distance of about 50km away from the area this account for the death of one Onyeka who slumped during a football match at Umueze Anam and died on the way to the hospital at Onitsha. His death would have been avoided if there was a functional health centre with first aid facilities; there are also many cases of people dying as a result of asthmatic attack and other epidermic. It is to address these problems and alleviate the sufferings of these vulnerable members of our society through the disease prevention and control and improvement of maternal and child health that the Rotary Club of Awka GRA plans to provide this health centre fully equipped to the community.
