The need that has been identified is the equipping of an operating room at Holy Innocents Children's Hospital in Mbarara, Uganda. This hospital has been operating since July 2009 and has treated over 50,000 outpatient children and over 12,000 in-patient children for malaria, dysentery, respiratory diseases and other serious or life-threatening diseases. The hospital has contributed significantly to the health and well-being of children in Mbarara.

The hospital is now beginning its second phase, to build a surgical center with two operating rooms. The surgical center has been designed and is currently out to bid with local Ugandan contractors. Construction is expected to start in early 2014 and be completed in late Q3 2014. This new Rotary project will provide a significant portion of the equipment required to outfit one operating room.

Total cost of the equipment is expected to be $40,524. Rotary Fallbrook is contributing $15,000. We hope to obtain $7,500 in DDF from District 5340, and a match of $15,000 from TRF. The remaining $3,024 will be provided by the hospital and/or San Diego-based Holy Innocents Children's Hospital Uganda, Inc., an IRS 501(c)(3) which funded the initial construction and start-up of the hospital.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.

Submitted by Jason Springston, President Rotary Club of Fallbrook:

This project is VERY MUCH STILL ONGOING! (We are working with HICH on an existing PRIOR project and do not want to confuse the two equipment purchases.) This purchase will be made asap.

Note from RC Mbarara:

Dear Rotarians,

This project is still ongoing.

The Rotary Club of Fallbrook (USA) has already received the funds from RI to purchase the equipment for the operating theater at Holy Innocents Hospital here in Mbarara. The local supplieys have already been identified through an open tender process.

We are waiting for delivery and installation of equipment.

Payments to the suppliers shall be made after installation and commissioning of the equipment.

The Project G537 & GG1417447 is very alive and very promising. We are completing the last of two projects that our Fallbrook Club has sponsored, and will have completed both of them by the end of December 2014 (as scheduled). We are transforming all the information contained within the Proposal in the district's matching grants website, into the Application format desired by TRF. Our goal is to have TRF approval within the early part of next year.

07/22/2015. This project is definitely alive and active for both the Mbarara Club and our club, Fallbrook Rotary. Due to the summer months, progress has been slower than usual. However we remain fully committed to this project and to supporting the surgical center at The Holy Innocents Children's Hospital in Mbarara.

06-17-2016 To my knowledge, our Fallbrook Rotary Club & our San Diego District Club have completed all that we can to get this grant a final approval. It seems that we are waiting for the Primary Club and its management to "sign" their approval or to tell us why they cannot.
