PROJECT PROPOSAL
1. PROJECT: SCREENING OF 2000 WOMEN FOR CERVICAL CANCER IN EBONYI STATE
2. INTRODOCTION: Globally, cervical cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer death in women, second only to breast cancer with an estimated 510,000 newly diagnosed cervical cancer cases and 288,000 deaths. Virtually- all cervical cancers are casually related to infections by Humanpapilloma (HPV), an easily transmissible highly prevalent, tissue-Specific DNA virus. Invasive cervical cancer, if detected early, can be treated successfully; five-year survival for woman with cancer in the earliest stage (Stage 1A, in which the cancer has had minimal spread to the inside of the cervix) is estimated 92%. Hysterectomy and radiotherapy are the recommended primary treatments for cervical cancer. But in developing countries it is not widely available or accessible. Screening programme, which have contributed to the70% to 80% reduction of cervical cancer incidence in the developed countries do not exist or are ineffective in developing countries due largely to limited resources (i.e supplies, trained personnel, equipment, quality control, healthcare infrastructure, and effective follow-up procedures). Since the costs of cervical cancer treatment confers enormous, if not overwhelming, burden on the individual women and their community and in almost non-existent in the healthcare programme developing countries like Nigeria, the best alternative is therefore, preventive methods, prevention of cervical cancer can be achieved by preventing infection initially or detecting the precursors to cervical cancer and providing treatment. In Ebonyi State more than 80% of cervical cancer cases present to the health institutions at a state that cure is impossible. A well women centre (formerly Cancer Screening Unit) was established in 2012 at the Tertiary health facility -The Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, to pick up cases early among other services. About 350 women have been screened since its establishment indicating low uptake. Studies have shown this low uptake to be as a result of low awareness level and lack of fund to access care. The centre offer screening using low cost technique- Visual inspection with Acidic acid and offer Pap smear to clients who can afford it. About 6% of the 350 had one abnormalities or the other and at different levels of management. Many women in Ebonyi State cannot afford to screen themselves. For this reason we seek partnership to provide free screening for 2000 women in Ebonyi State.
3. PROJECT BENEFIT: Screening women for cervical cancer will reduce the burden of the disease in the community and thereby enabling our women to live a more productive life in the society.
