A human milk bank is a service established for collecting, screening, processing, storing and distributing donated human milk. Breastfeeding is life saving (can reduce childhood mortality rate by up to 15%) and has life long positive health impact on child, mother & society. (Many references are found in scientific literature supporting these facts). The scientific practice of breastfeeding is not practiced hundred percent at all instances. This assumes more importance because of the influence of the infant milk substitutes and bottles which causes severe individual and population harm as reflected in higher morbidity and mortality in non-breastfed children and negative impact on ecology and economics.

There are unfortunate children who do not get their mother's milk, the reasons can be many. It is their birth right to get human milk. According to WHO and UNICEF: "The best food for a baby who cannot be breastfed is milk expressed from the mother's breast or from another healthy mother"; "Where it is not possible for the biological mother to breast feed, the first alternative, if available, should be the use of human milk from other sources. Human milk banks should be made available in appropriate situations"

"Donor milk retains its bioactivity despite partial or complete loss of some components. The enzymes in breast milk appear to be most affected by the heat. However, immune factors are less sensitive to heat and growth factors and fatty acids are stable at pasteurization temperatures"

In India wet-nursing within the family and social groups has been a cultural norm, accepted from mythological example of Lord Krishna and his non-biological mother Yashoda. With the vision to save maximum number of sick neonates.

so to fulfill the same District 3060 has adopted a project Human Milk Banking as a district service project & Dr Prashant Kariya is appointed as a Chairperson for the same project. we are planning to start four milk banks in gujarat this year & for the same we call for help from all the rotarian brothers & sisters.

Every year breast feeding promotion will be undertaken on mass level throughout August, involving all sections of society from college-school students to post menopausal women, covering all socioeconomic strata, organizing updates for doctors and nurses, campaigning on through TV, radio and press media, hoardings, stickers, handbills, banners, competitions (quiz, poster, power point presentation, Street plays), mass-SMS by the rotarians.
