In Nepal, cervical cancer is the number one cancer affecting women. Cervical cancer is a disease affecting women in the prime of their lives. Abnormal cells on the cervix can slowly develop into cancerous lesions that, if untreated, may lead to cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is an entirely preventable disease. Abnormal cells can be detected by screening and treated simply before becoming cancerous. We can reduce the incidence of abnormal cells even further by vaccinating against a virus that causes the cell abnormalities.
Girls aged 11-13 years that receive the vaccine prior to infection (before sexual contact) will be protected from 70-80% of cervical cancer. The vaccine has three doses. After the first dose you need a second at two months and a third at 6 months. For the vaccine to be effective you need to receive all three doses.
We will have camps for screening of cervical cancer and vaccinate 11-13 year of teenagers in urban and remote areas of Nepal.
