Project Description Region: South America Country: Brazil Location: Sao Jose do Rio Preto Total Budget: $34,500 Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Maternal and child health Acquisition of a vehicle with the necessary adaptations to install a Mobile Unit for Human Milk Bank collection, aiming to increase this service in the Human Milk Bank of São Jose do Rio Preto. The Human Milk Bank of São José do Rio Preto was purchased with funds from the Rotarian Foundation, through the Allowance Equivalent Project - Matching Grants - MG # (15/12/2003). The Mobile Unit has as an objective increase the divulgation and collection of human milk, moving to neighborhoods and close cities of São José do Rio Preto, aiming to orient donor mothers the importance of breastfeeding and donation of surplus milk. Milk that will feed the premature babies, underweight, those who cannot suck, with immunodeficiency, those with problems in the digestive tract or in cases of mothers who for some health problem, cannot breastfeed their son. The Mobile Unit will increase the scope of the Human Milk Bank on 50% approximate, bringing the benefits achieved to a total of population about 600,000 inhabitants, reducing, as in the present region, the mortality rate of newborns to almost zero. Breast milk is always indicated by prescription or nutritionist.
