Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Colombia

Location: Medellin

Total Budget: $50,000

Areas of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention, Basic education and literacy

The barrio San José del Pinar is located in the north-east of the city of Medellin. It is characterized by a very difficult environment. The access roads are not paved and have no public services such as water and sewer. This makes its inhabitants in a very needy community, where poverty and misery coexist. Poverty and misery are present in all people; their houses are made of recycled cardboard, plastic, wood and other items.

Among the main difficulties in the Community are domestic violence, the influence of armed groups, the proliferation of gangs, crime and child prostitution.

Due to the lack of educational facilities, illiteracy and therefore there is no minimum skills for decent work, turning its inhabitants into a community that needs help soon.

It is a very depressed area where poverty and misery coexist. All families living there have suffered forced displacement by the violence in our country, Colombia. No public schools which provide free education and the community has no facility to attend primary school. They need places that combine recreation activities that promote the study, reading, healthy habits and leisure.

ABC PRODEIN (Catholic Christian Charity Association for Promoting Integral Development) is a non-governmental and non-profit organization (NGO). It is the institution which provides free education, health care and food to 550 children in the area. They also help the entire Community with food, services and values education. When they began working with the Community, only had coverage for younger children, now they are serving grades kindergarten through 6 th.

Thanks to the donation of land and building materials, they have been building the school.

The Community of San José del Pinar urgently needs the provision of a library and playroom.

With comprehensive training, children will have fun activities and comprehensive training that enables them to experience new forms of dialogue and relationship with their educational environment, cultural, and social. Furthermore, they will choose a site for productive activities in their spare time, recognizing different ways and solutions to social problems they face every day.

The Medellín Nutibara Rotary Club will use all funds for the implementation of the project, benefiting children, youth, adults and seniors.
