Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Kenya

Location: Kapsowar

Total Budget: $50,000

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Maternal and child health

The proposed matching grant is for the purpose of providing much-needed medical equipment and supplies to the AIC Kapsowar Hospital located in Northwest Kenya http://www.kapsowar.com/. The facility includes a 140 bed multi-building hospital and a nursing school.

The AIC Kapsowar Mission Hospital in Kapsowar, Kenya, has 90 staffed beds. Built in 1933, the hospital campus has 14 buildings. Physicians from Kapsowar provide services for many small clinics throughout the region. There are plans to build an updated operating room and a nursing school on the hospital grounds.

The Johnson City Rotary Club will coordinate one shipping container of medical supplies and equipment, containing approximately $500,000 in donated medical equipment and supplies.

A four-person needs analysis team visited the hospitals in 2007 and their report has formed the basis for the proposed activities. They visited each hospital, toured the facilities and evaluated the condition of the facilities and equipment first hand. The hospital administrators provided a list of the equipment that they had identified as being needed. The needs analysis team assigned each item a priority: high, medium, or low; based on the existing equipment, current infrastructure, future plans and capabilities, and patient safety and well-being.

The needs analysis is being updated by Dr. Sue Crawford, IMEC Medical Director, in March 2010. Final sourcing decisions will be based upon this updated assessment.

The donated supplies will be gathered and delivered by IMEC. IMEC has coordinated multiple medical supply shipments into Kenya. IMEC's assistance will help us to ensure that the equipment arrives safely, is installed correctly, and that the personnel are trained appropriately.

There will be "hands on" opportunities for Rotarians to assist in the delivery and setup of the equipment at Kapsowar, and to further relationship between sponsoring Rotary Clubs.

We are currently seeking a Future Vision Pilot club in a participating District to serve as a "sponsor" club so as to fit within the parameters of the FVP program.
