"Milk, Economy and Health from the Green Valley " project is a proposal to establish an agricultural model to raise awareness for the economic development of the Eastern Black Sea Region. Changes in financial and cultural situation negatively affected the decreasing number of farmers.
Already diminished ability to renew their knowledge, skills and techniques resulted with the impoverishment of the area and inevitably migration to the cities. These conditions reduced the cows raised per household. The famous butter of Trabzon is made from the milk, produced by the cows were raised by woman who took good care of them. The role of women in this development will be encouraged and supported with a gender sensitive approach.
The project will be implemented in Iskenderli Village with the population of 1738, according to the 2011 statistics. A convenient location, open minded and democratic attitude of the residents and adequate infrastructure were some of the reasons to choose the vicinity.
Informing the farmers about the hygienic practices and importance of public health, how to learn and use new techniques to make new products besides the traditional items will include some of the benefits of this resourceful project. New generation will not only have access to indispensable raw materials but also a great source of nutrition; essential for a healthy life.
Twelve to fifteen women who is capable of taking care of a cow will be selected to participate in this project. They will be provided with one pregnant cow each with the condition that the calves will be given to other women in need. Cows and calves will be kept by their owners and the milk produced and processed will be their source of income. They will be provided with the assistance of the Rotary Club volunteer veterinarian.
Rotary district 2430 and Rotary Club of Trabzon will follow up with the project with the estimated 5.000 people consuming milk and milk products by the end of the process.
