The program has commenced by way of a few corporate donations locally.

Our Club wishes to apply for a Global Grant from Rotary International to make this a real viable project and we need a partnering Club to help support our application.

A consulting engineering company G N Developments Ltd has been appointed from the onset to oversee the design and implementation of the project.

The project progress is as follows:

1 A consultant as a Community Development Officer has been appointed by our Club from the commencement of the project in 2012 - his role has been to link up with the District Commissioner's office, village headman, the TA and all the residents of the village plus the creation of the Development Committee

2 The Village Headman has kindly donated to the Mwanyama community land for the farm, market and the health centre

3 Whilst Rotary Club of Limbe and its partners will monitor the project progress the owners of the project will be the Community - a legal document is to be drawn in this respect

4 The farm land has been divided into stands of 250 sq meter for each family

5 To date 320 families have registered and have paid MK 1000 each to be enrolled as members

6 Communal plots have been allocated for a fruit and vegetable orchard plus rearing of goats and chicken for the purpose of income generation - manure from the livestock will be used to encourage organic farming

7 The Seed Co Ltd is in the process of adopting the Village with the provisions of farm seeds both for dry crop and rain fed crop

8 The We effect Organization under the Malawi Lake Basin Program is to give all technical support regarding project management and finance management

Rotary Club of Limbe will focus on the first phase of the project ie Water for Irrigation as follows

1. Water for Irrigation:

The irrigation system was conceived with a view of improving the agricultural output by planting crops at least twice a year using improved farming methodologies. The objective of the irrigation consultancy component was therefore to assess, conduct surveys and design the Mwanyama Village Irrigation Scheme.

Following a number of consultations and considering the economic factors, a ground source has been opted as the source for irrigating the field. This entails drilling a borehole within the irrigation field up to a maximum depth of 50m and equipping it with a submersible grundfos pump.

The pump shall be powered by solar panels which will provide energy throughout the day. Water will be pumped into a 10,000litre plastic tank from where it will be conveyed by gravity force into the main and secondary canals.

The irrigation network and structures will consist of distribution pipelines, main canals and secondary structures, field canals and irrigation blocks. They shall be brick lined and plastered.

The key project components designs for Mwanyama Village Irrigation Scheme are summarized below:

Item Quantity

Intake Structure I No 45m deep Borehole

Pump Grundfos Submersible Pump

Reservoir tank 1No. Elevated tanks 10cu.m

Irrigation Canals 3No Main Canal brick lined 520m & 4No diversion control structures.

and Structures 4No Secondary Canal brick lined 700m & 6No drop structures.

Cost estimates for the works proposed for the irrigation components amount to US $42,100

Looking forward to hearing from you and I will be pleased to furnish any further information as required.

This will be a role model village which can be replicated also.

WITH THE IMPLIMENTATION OF THIS PROJECT AND THE INCREASE IN THE INCOME OF THE VILLAGERS WILL RESULT IN BETTERING THE ECONOMIC CONDITION AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT.

Yours in Rotary
