The city if San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora, Mexico is located at 32°28′36″N 114°45′45″W, on the Río Colorado, which at this point marks the state border with Baja California. It also stands on the international border with the United States, adjacent to San Luis, Arizona.
In the 2010 census, the city had a population of 159,089 and its municipality had a population of 178,380. Preseently, its population is estimated at over 200,000. The city is the fourth-largest community in the state of Sonora, and the municipality is also the fourth-largest. The municipality covers an area of 8,412.75 km² (3,248.2 sq mi) in the Sonoran Desert. It is located about 75 km from Mexicali, Baja California.
San Luis Río Colorado has a desert climate (Köppen climate classification BWh), with hot summers and mild winters; it is one of the hottest and driest cities in Mexico. The record high temperature is 52.0 °C (125.6 °F), recorded on June 25, 1951. The record low temperature is −6.5 °C (20.3 °F), recorded on January 2, 1950.
Its low income population does not have the economic resources to obtain the medical services that an Haemodialysis machine provides. Fee for services is very costly and some patients end up having to migrate to another city to obtain the services or end up dying due to complications because they could not afford such service. Haemodialysis also would afford these low income patients the opportunity for a transplant in the future.
The project involves the acquisition of two new Haemodialysis machines and accessories needed to provide complete Haemodialysis services. Accessories include two chairs or beds, special water filtration system, pluming and electrical work, storage cabinet, a sink and 300 Haemodialysis kits. These two fully functional Haemodialysis machine setups will be presented to the San Luis Rio Colorado General Hospital and they will make sure that the machines work adequately. The Sonora State Department of Health Services will be in charged of making sure that the machines are maintained in excellent working condition.
This project will be possible thanks to the collaboration of the host Rotary Club of San Luis Rio Colorado (4100), Imperial Valley Breakfast Rotary Club (5340), Yuma Crossing Rotary Club (5500), Barrhead (5370), Yuma Foothills (5500), St. Maries (5080), Somerton (5500), San Felipe (4100), La Mesa (5340) and Rotary Club of Westlock, Alberta, Canada (5370). Members from these clubs will be available to supervise the installation of the machines and accessories as well as to compile the initial list patients that will receive much needed medical attention. Also members of these clubs will meet twice a year to evaluate and to verify that the machines are providing adequate service to the low income population of the community of San Luis Rio Colorado.
The goal is to raise enough funds between all the clubs, DDF and have The Rotary Foundation match it. The anticipated completion date is December 2014.
