Location: Cape Town
|
Total Budget:
$30,000
|
Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Nationally in South Africa only 7 percent of public schools have functional libraries. This is an appalling situation since not only is the school library a fundemetal source for introducing children to books and creating the conditions for reading and a culture of learning, it is also basics for mastering the other essential school subjects. The new project is a continuation of a current project and funding is sought to establish fully functional and sustainable libraries in nine previous disadvantaged schools in the greater cape town area. The project is reaching 5517 school learners at nine schools and the staff of the schools also benefit. The funds will be used to provide library fittings and fixtures, appropriate books and materials, stationary, dictionaries, training for librarians and assistants. The time line of the project is 3 years and thirteen club members are involved.
