The 2014 Marathon's theme was "Empowering Future leaders though Education" and the funds raised will go towards refurbishing a phase2 of a 400m2 state of the art, Learning Resource Centre at the University of Dar es Salaam. The University of Dar es Salaam Library is the first and the largest University library in Tanzania. It was first established in 1961 as the Library of the Dar es Salaam University College, a constituent college of the University of East Africa, based at Lumumba Street in Dar es Salaam. The Library moved to its current premises at the Hill alongside with the College in 1964. The College Library became the University of Dar es Salaam Library by the Act of Parliament in 1970, which established the University of Dar es Salaam. The vision of the library was and still is to become the centre of excellence in information provision in the country, and its mission is to provide scholarly information resources to its current and future academic community to support the core functions of the university, which are teaching, research and service to the community.
Since its establishment, the University of Dar es Salaam has expanded not only in academic programmes but also in student enrolment which was 2,000 students in 1980's and is currently over 15,000 students. The library needs a much needed refurbishment and newer facilities to keep up with the student numbers and modern technology hence Rotary clubs in Dar es salaam has decided to refurbish a part of the existing library to provide resources which will include a 80 seater thin client computer systems on a local area network assisting students to become entrepreneurs in the field of Information technology by studying a host of computer subjects and other related on-line courses. Use the systems as a resource for courses being taught at the university and as well as open the centre to the community around.
The project funds will be used to refurbish 400 sqmts of space with flooring, lighting, wiring 80 computer systems, local area network, servers, basic software and desks. We would like to start the project in Jan 2015 and finish by Aug 2015.
