Working with the Jurd Development Forum and the Minister of Education, this grant will supply and maintain computer and audio visual installations in public schools throughout the country of Lebanon. The labs will be used for educating both teachers and students in computer science. This project will potentially benefit 25,000 students.
This is the fourth project of its kind in Lebanon. These projects were started by the Rotary Club of San Rafael Harbor and the Rotary Club of Aley after San Rafael Harbor member Aref Ahmadia met with various Lebanese Educators in the area of the Jurd and asked them what they needed most in their schools. (Previous grants were numbered 70565, 75083 and 77008). These educators all expressed the need to bring their students into the computer age. The educational infrastructure had been ravaged by years of war and the school system is hard pressed to provide basic facilities.
This project will provide teachers with the skills to teach their students basic computer programs, such as, Word, Excel and AutoCAD. They will then conduct classes in these skills for their students. They will also use the computers to facilitate developing their lesson plans and in grading.
After seeing the success of the programs in the Jurd, the Lebanese Minister of Education approached the Rotary District Governor and asked that the projects be expanded to include the entire school system. He appointed a liaison to work with local Rotarians and to provide the full support of his office.
