The Burn Treatment Hospital of Buenos Aires City since its opening, in the year 1952, fulfills a very important social function by treating patients with an acute, severe and complex pathology, which leaves emotional, physical and social squeals. This hospital is the only one in Argentina with these characteristics. It already creates a sense of anguish how difficult it is to treat this type of patients in a health system which is not adequately set-up to cover all the therapeutic necessities of the treatment they need.

Since its opening, this hospital has been a great addition to the health system that treats burnt patients in the City of Buenos Aires, Gran Buenos Aires, and the rest of the country. The demand has forced it to grow in the complexity of its infrastructure in the different services provided, to offer care and adequate treatment along with the technological advance that this pathology requires.

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit , opened in October 2013, is a closed area, which means that everything that has to be done in order to treat the patient is done within this Unit. The Unit comprises of ten (10) isolated and individual beds. Moreover, it also has two (2) complete operating rooms (appropriate place to complete surgeries and grafts) and two (2) hidrotherapy rooms (rooms where the decontamination process of the patient takes place) exclusives for this Unit. From the Intensive Care point of view, it comprises of high complexity medical equipment. Each bed has the latest generation of respirators and multi-parameter monitors. It also has a centralized system of information and monitoring of each patient, which facilitates for adequate control of such, also preventing infections by not having to be in

constant contact with the patient. A centralized air conditioning system is also available, which is closed and, providing a stable and individualized temperature for each patient. It is also equipped with a laminar flow system, which allows for adequate handling of fractionated medication, preventing infections and optimizing its utilization. Within the Unit, there is also a living room equipped with a bathroom for the parents to stay while their children are being treated within Unit. The burt patient requires an individual treatment, multidisciplinary and that comprises its family, in order contain the anguish and consequences left by the injuries sustained.

This Unit would not be able to function without the essential presence of the human resources, which are already in place to begin their work at the Unit.

Human resources is comprised of the following: Pediatric Therapy Doctors, Plastic Surgeons, Pediatric Anesthesiologists, Nurses, Pediatric Surgical Scrub Nurses, Kinesiologists, Psychologists, Nutritionists, Stretcher- Bearers, Secretary and cleaning personnel.

With such an immense growth some elements are still pending, elements which would be important to have within the Unit, to provide an even better care and treatment of the burnt pediatric patients.

The HIGH FREQUENCY OSCILLATORY VENTILATOR (HFOV) is a type of ventilator which is used frequently on patients with inhalation problems. This ventilator is of great importance because it helps the lungs alveoli which are collapsed by the lack of substance that allows the lungs to expand. The HFOV has significantly improved the life expectancy of the patients, by diminishing the respiratory sequelae from the use of conventional ventilators. The HFOV is much needed in this Pediatric Intensive Care Unit as it is necessary to treat the patients who present collapsed lungs as a result of inhalation syndrome.

The HFOV's needed are two (2):

a) SENSOR MEDICS CareFusion 3100 A : For newborns and child weighting up to 40

kilos.

b) SENSOR MEDICS CareFusion 3100 B: For patients over 40 kilos.

Scope of beneficiary Population:

According to the report provided by the Statistics for the health of Burn Treatment Hospital group, throughout the year 2011 there were 18273 cases of burnt people treated, of which 478 were kids which required a hospital stay. In 2012 there were 19258 cases of burnt people treated, of which 463 were kids.

It is important to note that the Burn Treatment Hospital depends of the City of Buenos Aires government, but assists anyone who requires treatment, and usually receives patients which are derived from other places in Buenos Aires and the rest of the provinces within Argentine. Therefore, even though it is a municipal Hospital it reaches national levels.

The funds will be used for the purchase of a High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilator SENSOR MEDICS CareFusin 3100 A ( for newborns and children weighting up to 40 kilograms)

Once received Project funds, the Project will be completed in a period of six months.

Local Rotarians will be in charge of purchasing the Ventilator and they will be in direct and permanent contact with the Burnt Hospital's authorities.

The local rotarian will inform Project's progress to the International rotarians.

Local newspaper, magazines and radios will be informed by the local Rotary Club about all of the activities of this Project, promoting Rotary's work to improve children's quality life.
