Drinking water project for Ambalapara village, ottapalam taluk, palakkad dist. Kerala state, India.
Ambalapara village is on the foothills of 'ananagan hills', a dry and rocky area, with an area covering around 5000 Hectares. With patches of cultivable fertile areas. This area has a population of around 56000 who depend on their livelihood cultivating paddy. There is an acute shortage of drinking water during the dry months of November to June.
The Rotary club of ottapalam intends to provide, drinking water to Ambalapara to mitigate the sufferings of the people of this area.
The project includes construction of a concrete water tank of 51,000 liters capacity at a Vital ground, a deep bore well, where scientific tests confirm that adequate potable water will be available, pipelines from the bore well to the concrete water tank, and 2X20 HP multi stage submersible pumps, along with electric connection. The stored water will be distributed to the beneficiaries through supply lines provided by the local Panchayat.
This is a self sustaining project, which will cost approximately US$ 50,000. This project will benefit the health and hygiene of, approximately, 500 residences where there is acute shortage of drinking water. And also provide potable water through common taps to around 4000 inhabitants, thereby preventing water borne diseases throughout the year.
The above mentioned project will enhance the image of Rotary, even at remote places at ottapalam, the local self government will also be aware of Rotary initiatives, the locals will be aware of the Rotary International, and the Matching Grant partner. Overall, it will be a path breaker for other clubs to undertake community based mega projects in rural areas.
