More than 200,000 people die every year in India due to kidney disease. According to media reports, the high incidence of death from kidney disease is not only because of lack of awareness and early detection, but also due to shortage of dialysis equipment, among other reasons. Each dialysis cost about Rs.2000 (32 USD) and these are not affordable to thousands of patients from the economically poor section of the society.
We, at Rotary Club of Madras South, have identified this need as a project in service of the community and to help kidney patients to get free dialysis service. We have joined hands with Sri Matha Cancer Care, a secular charitable institution located in Adyar, Chennai that provides palliative care and serves terminally ill patients. We have recently donated a dialysis machine to this Centre, costing about Rs.525,000 (8500 USD). This donation will help provide dialysis to two patients every day, but there are more poor patients in the waiting list for this service every day. The Centre has two dialysis machines (including the one donated by our Club) and needs 10 dialysis machines to support the dialysis needs of the poor patients.
Our Community Service (Health) team is involved with this Centre and offer free meal to all the in-patients of this Centre one day of every month. We are now working to donate more dialysis machine to this Centre in the next one and half year (Rotary years 2013-14 & 2014-15) and serve the community.
We are looking for an international partner to support us on this project. The grant will be used to buy 8 dialysis machine during the project period.
