Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Uganda

Location: Lukaya

Total Budget: $157,018

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

Mustard Seed Academy (MSA) is a growing faith-based school run by Tree of Life Ministries with the support of American non-profit Real Partners Uganda, Inc. It serves 500 of the neediest children in the community of Lukaya, Uganda, orphans and vulnerable kids, who without the assistance would have few prospects for an education and a decent life. Unlike other schools in the surrounding area, MSA provides not only top-flight education, but also comprehensive care (feeding, clothing, medical treatment and loving supervision) for the children. These children are admitted regardless of faith alliliations or political status of their families. The impact has been dramatic. In comparison to other schools, both in the township and broader district, MSA students are the healthiest, highest achieving academically, best English speakers, and excel in co-curricular activities such as sports and music, dance and drama.

The school, which had its start in Feb. 2009, has grown dramatically, now serving children from 3 to 15 years of age in nursery, primary and secondary schools. Tree of Life Ministries (TOLM) has largely completed a nursery school on a 2.5-acre campus, but the larger group in primary and secondary school occupy temporary quarters, and with help from RPU, has purchased a 13-acre parcel of land. On the new 13 acre Green Campus where the Rotary-sponsored water and watse management systems will be installed.Subsequent construction of permanent buildings will follow immediately. We will be drilling two wells and installing associated water and waste management systems.
