Areas of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene, Community economic development
The food and income of Nabuzo Bajo, located close to Riobamba at 9000 feet elevation, is agricultural based. It is tied to the limited quantity of water to irrigate farmlands. Currently there is a main line coming from a supply source about 1000 feet higher in the mountains. A community group of local farmers secured the natural water source about ten years ago. They dug the trench, laid the pipe, and installed the pressure regulator down to the level of several land parcels. The main line extends along one side of the area so only the nearest parcels are receiving water at this time. Now they are hoping to obtain funds to purchase pipe, connectors, and regulator systems to install several lateral lines to bring the water to other parcels of farmland belonging to the community organization. Again they will dig the necessary trenches, lay the pipe, install regulators, and backfill the trenches. After receiving funds for purchase of supplies, it is anticipated that it will take six months to do this.
The beneficiaries of the irrigation system have been organized as an officially recognized irrigation group for 30 years. The Nabuzo Bajo irrigation group has 41 farm parcels and more than 164 direct beneficiaries. This project will increase the area being irrigated to over 58 hectares while avoiding soil erosion and creating the opportunity for more diversified agriculture than is currently possible. An member of Riobamba Rotary Club, who is an administrator of the irrigation program of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture, and Fisheries, who is assigned to the region, will help oversee the project. Following installation of the irrigation system, farmers will be given seeds, technical support on organic fertilizers, and other information. The resulting diversity of crops will result in increased income and better nutrition for farm families.

It was necessary to do some additional assessment and planning once the grant funds were received. The lists of materials and estimated costs were reviewed by the Riobamba Rotary Club in late April. Purchasing has now been done and the underground pipe was delivered May 21. On May 25 the residents of Nabuzo Bajo expect to start excavating and moving pipe into place.
