Project : DIABETIC RETINOPATHY TREATMENT

Rotary Bangalore North under District 3190 operates its own eye hospital with a club strength of 72 Rotarians. We undertake Cataract surgeries regularly for poor and needy patients who are identified through our outreach camps conducted at regular intervals. We have a dedicated team of doctors employed by us, and our eye hospital is fully equipped with the latest surgical devices for conducting surgeries where expenses for the entire period of stay, the treatment cost including the cost of consumables, etc. is borne by the club.

As per advice of our doctors and the need felt by the club,DIABETIC RETINOPATHY TREATMENT is of crucial importance aimed at avoiding blindness. In this regard our club has identified the need for few more sophisticated equipments, as this would help us to be more well equipped for treating various eye ailments afflicting the impoverished lot.

We have been running this eye hospital since a long time and this is a sustainable project and it has a very good visibility for Rotary.

Timeline of the project : We intend to commence up-gradation of our hospital facilities during the year 2014-15. We would conclude the project within a year by putting in place the critical equipments but the treatment of the patients thereafter would be an ongoing exercise, year after year.

Project Fund : As we had identified, the majority of funds would go towards purchase of equipments listed in the project report, and are meant to be used for the treatment of patients suffering from DIABETIC RETINOPATHY.The major part of the funds would go towards buying these identified sophisticated equipments. Below given list of equipments have their prices mentioned in Indian rupees and equivalent US$.

Quotes have been obtained from the registered suppliers; the scanned copies are also attached for detailed scrutiny:

The hospital has built up substantial facilities over a period of time and the latest acquisitions in the last one month have also been mentioned below.

Currently our eye hospital is involved in the following aspects of eye care:

1) Refraction & Contact Lens Clinic -Auto refractometer is currently procured . The current cost of around INR 3.00 lakhs has been fully met from the contributions from our member Rotarian.A slit lamp with motorized stand at a cost of INR 65000/- is also a recent addition and these equipments have substituted the older machines that we already had with us but were non-functional.

2) Management of cataract cases-Small incision cataract surgery and phacoemulsification are currently performed for cataract patients.

3) Glaucoma screening and Surgery-Currently we are using the VISUAL FIELDS EQUIPMENT which requires upgradation as the existing equipment does not give accurate results as required under current standard.

A new accquisition viz., HUMPHREY VISUAL FIELDS MACHINE alongwith PACHYMETER is proposed to be purchased at a price of INR 8,00,000/- (US$ 13000). This will help us improve our glaucoma diagnostic profile.

The Intra-Ocular pressure checking instrument namely ICARE TONO Meter is also currently made available . This has costed us around INR 2.00 lakhs (US $ 3000) and this too has been made possible because of generous gesture from our very own Rotarians.

4) Management for Diabetic patients-Yellow laser/green laser , Fundus camera , OCT Scan , B scan , Vitrectomy machine are presently not available; so the patients are advised to approach other hospital after diagnosis. We intend to make these equipments available so that above treatments can be conducted totally and comprehensively at our eye hospital.

5)Yellow laser/Green laser costing around INR 26.50 lakhs(US$45000) is an EMERGENCY REQUIREMENT.Cost of each of these machines are indicated and supported by quotes from vendors:

Vitrectomy Machine costs around INR 35.00 lakhs (US$58500;QUOTE NOT RECEIVED;PROCUREMENT CAN BE DEFERRED)

Fundus camera costs INR 17.50 lakhs(US$ 29000)

B scan cost is around INR 9.40 lakhs(US$ 15600)

Oct scan cost is around INR 38.00 lakhs(US$64000-CAN BE DEFERRED FOR FUTURE PROCUREMENT)

The hospital needs minimum INR 50.00 lakhs during the year 2014-15, towards procurement of a few critical equipments amongst the above stated equipments. The list of equipments mentioned above would have to be procured by us finally(which may spill over the year 14-15) to make our eye hospital equipped with state of the art facilities.

Further hospital needs to provide for reserve funds for the smooth running of the hospital .

The hospital has been running till recently on the basis of grants given by Rotary International and Donations by individual patrons. Yearly expenses incurred towards staff and doctors, materials cost and maintenance of hospital building, etc. works out to Rs.42 lakhs(US$70000). There were no grants since past 4 years thereby making it very difficult for us to carry on the yeoman services to poor people. We could still carry on because of support received from our rotarians and other sponsorers.

Objective of Future Vision : Grant of 80000 $ equivalent funds for purchase of equipment is sought to fulfill the vision of Rotarians in the club, to extend good eye-care service to poor and needy patients. Additionally the club needs to generate funds of Rs.42 lakhs(US$70000) to sustain the expenses of doctor, maintenance and purchase of materials at hospital.
