Project Description

Region: Eastern Europe

Country: Turkey

Location: Adana

Total Budget: $30,400

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

. The Pathology Department uses formalin to fix grossed tissue, autopsy specimens, and Cytology cell blocks. Formaldehyde is a colorless, aqueous solution that has an irritating pungent odor and is classified as an upper respiratory irritant

because of its high solubility in water.

It is also critical to note that the National Toxicology '11th report on carcinogens" classifies formaldehyde as "reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen".

As you know, for laboratory workers highest exposure rate of formalin is in during

preparation step. Automated Formalin Preparation & Dispensing Device is the solution for this problem. This device is known as FORMADOSE ,

REDUCING CHEMICAL WASTE FROM THE EARTH WITH

ALCOHOL & XYLENE RECYCLER DEVICE

Pathology laboratories use both alcohol and xylene for processing to pathological slides which obtained from human organs and tissues.

Xylene is used to remove paraffin from dried microscope slides prior to staining. After staining, microscope slides are put in xylene prior to mounting with a coverslip.

But in Turkey there is no warning system for waste xylene contamination to the water or ground. Therefore xylene can be dangerous for public health.

ALCOHOL & XYLENE RECYCLER DEVICE

The device recycled these chemical to use fractional distilation method. Thanks to this device it is possible to:

•Reduce or elimanate disposal cost.

•Reduce cost and usage of new chemicals

•Control inventory in the laboratory.

•Reduce enviromental impact.

Recycler method is part of waste minimization project. After the distillation process, the quality of of the distilled xylene is higher and more consistent than purchased one. However if we use these device for re-using xylene and alcohol, and formaldehyde dispensing (formadose), total costs of our laboratory will reduce dramatically.

So our clinic can spend the gain for scientific researchs

Rotary club will be leading in the introduction of these devices and will be organising seminars for the Univiersities admin and pathologues and students for the purpose of the need and technology of these devices. These costs are inclusive of the total project prices.
