Ubuntu For Life is a home that caters for orphaned and vulnerable children in Kenya.
Main focus is on the education of the boy child. The children are from the streets around and in Gilgil.
Gilgil at present has a population of 120,000 Inhabitants. Within this township exists a slum called Lelusha which has 700 inhabitants. The Organization's overall mission is to reinforce the ability of the targeted community to take care of its own Orphans and Vulnerable children's academic development in order to create a stable society.
Ubuntu For Life is in Naivasha district, Gilgil division, and karunga location at Langalanga estate. It is 15 kms along Gilgil Miharati road. The place is well known as Konoike.
There is a general water problem in the area. The only proximate source of water is river malewa. When it rains, all the water in the area runs down to the river. These water source dry up during very dry seasons. Traditionally it is left to the children to fetch water and disrupts the lives of children as they have to walk long distances to the river.and wait for many hours. This affects their education as they are late to go to school and are too tired to concentrate.
The benefitting community lives in Konoike area which is in Gilgil. They will benefit from the borehole, water for human consumption, needs and farming.
The needs identified are lack of adequate constant clean water for drinking, cooking, bathing, washing and farming. Due to the increased number of children, the water is not enough which can be a health hazard and cause waterborne diseases. Farming is done on the land but the yield is little as the water is not enough. Rain water is not reliable in the area.
By providing a borehole to the home there will be enough water for the children to drink and use and for irrigation. There will be prevention of water borne diseases as sanitary area will be thoroughly cleaned.
The timeline for the project is 4 months commencing August 2017 and ending November 2017.
The project funds will be used to drill a borehole, install the piping and pump the water to the surface. In the interim a drip irrigation has been planned to be installed to provide a vegetable farm meanwhile, the water will be fetched from the nearby river.
Club members will oversee how funds are disbursed and follow the procurement process to engage the services of a professional. The members under the leadership of the project coordinator will coordinate the activities of the Project, together with the community members, officials and Maintenance Officers. Rotary club of Karen Committee will monitor the project implementation at every stage. The project will be supervised by the Director, Staff, Community beneficiaries/ officers and volunteers The club members will also visit the home at different stages till completion and commissioning.
