Project Description

Region: South-East Asia

Country: Bangladesh

Location: Dhaka & Kulna

Total Budget: $65,524

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Teaching mothers to teach 3-5 children in their homes in these urban slums addresses the literacy needs of uneducated women with no interaction outside of their hut; only a few have jobs. Their children do not attend school. UNESCO says that getting more children into schools has stagnated in the past several years. New models and approaches are need according to The Economist in 2010.This project develops and implements administrative tools using technology for curriculum development, student evaluation and record management through simple documentation and database systems. Rotary funding of these tools and methods will enable the Amarok Society to reach many more children in the poorest slums in Dhaka in a shorter period of time while ensuring quality and sustainability. Dhaka Midtown club member will monitor acquisition of digital tools, teaching methods and provide Rotary host responsibilities.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
