The district of Palakkad located in central Kerala is comparatively one of the backward
districts of the state. A number of tribal colonies including one of the most backward region, Attapady, exist in this district. The colony in Chelenkara in Pottasseri Panchayath Mannarkkad Taluk is one such backward colony where Adivasis, Scheduled Cast and Scheduled Tribes inhabit. This colony which is home to around sixty families has no proper housing or sanitation facilities. The inhabitants of this colony are poor labourers having very low income living in very pathetic an unhygienic condition. As they have no proper toilets in the houses the inhabitants including women and children resort to open defecation. This causes spreading of epidemic diseases. Non availability of proper covered toilets force people to resist the urge to relieve themselves in the open air during day time and wait for it to get dark before relieving themselves in the open fields. This resistance of natural urges results in urinary tract infections, kidney stone diseases etc.....
This practice of answering natures call leads to unhygienic environment and results in
spread of diseases. Many diseases are direct consequences of lack of basic toilet facilities. We intend to provide sixty toilets in this colony at a cost of around Rupees 24 Lakhs/ $ 38,710 ( 60 Units @ $ 645)
