Traffic accidents are major cause of death and injuries world wide but while rates of
accidents are declining in many parts of the developed world, fatalities due to accidents are on the rise in many developing countries including India. According to estimates more than 1,50,000 people die every year in India ie; 15 people die and 60 severely injured every hour.50% fatalities can be avoided if they receive proper medical care according to Law Commission of India ie; 75,000 Lives saved.
The proposed project is setting up of two "Ventilator Units" at Essaf Hospital
Thachampara, located on the side of NH 213 at Thachampara, Palakkad District at a cost of
Rupees 19 Lakhs (Rupees 9.5 Lakhs each)NH 213 which passes through Palakkad, Malappuram, Calicut is one of the busiest national highways in the state where there is high density of traffic especially large oil/gas tankers, cargo trucks, transport buses/ lorries in addition to the thousands of private vehicles. Frequent accidents occur in this busy highway, several of them fatal, primarily due to lack of proper medical facilities in the vicinity. No advanced medical facilities with latest equipments are available within a radius of over 100 Kms and victims have to be taken to Coimbatore (State of Tamil Nadu) or Perinthalmanna / Calicut for proper medical care.
Setting up of these ventilator units will help provide to the victims timely support and care. It is all the more imperative because 80% of the accident victims do not get medical help with in the first one hour or golden hour of the occurrence of the accident. 20 - 33% deaths can be avoided provided they get medical help in time.
