Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Ecuador

Location: Santa Rosa

Total Budget: $42,720

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Community economic development

With the increase in number of people with diabetes all over the world, there is more incidence of kidney failure. The only current solution for treatment of renal failure is hemodialysis. In Santa Rosa, Province of Oro in Ecuador, there are no facility at this time for hemodialysis and the closest place is about 100 miles. Traveling that distance for the treatment is not possible for lots of patients due to the cost involved. Without the treatment, people will die within a short period of time and the quality of life in the last days of the life is not so good to the patient as well as the caretakers.

The project funds will be used to procure two dialysis machines, training the caregivers, educate the general populace in the prevention of diabetes and reduce and or prevent the chances of renal failure.

The Rotarians will be working with the hospital, provincial government and local officials in the design and implementation of this very important health initiative.
