The Rehabilitation Center for Deaf and/or Blind Children and Teenagers is a unique Center for Ecuador and one of a few in all of Latin America. These are children/teenagers that come from very poor families who have little money, even for food. The Center Director Dr. Margarita Villacres, she herself has experienced blindness and deafness as a result of a childhood accident, thus having experience and empathy for her subjects. Many of the children and adolescents also have other health issues such as Cerebral Palsy which adds to the challenges for Dr. Villacres and her staff. The Government and City officials of the largest city in Ecuador, Guayaquil have done very little to support these children/adolescents. In addition some families are reluctant to take their children out from home in fear of a stigma. Up to 30 beneficiaries will be involved in this project receiving support at the Center and when necessary with home visitations.
The timeline for this project is a 12 month period that upon receiving the funds from The Rotary Foundation, activities, such as, medical attention from special physicians and medical assistants, psychologists, social workers, working with both the children and family members will be available as per a set schedule. Funds will also be used for special equipment and devices, nutritional snacks, and transportation costs for the deaf and blind subjects. Rotary members from the Host Rotary Club, Guayaquil Norte, and Guayaquil Occidente will support the planned activities in special fund-raising events and volunteering at the Rehab Center.
