Sya community is located a few degrees below the equator line in Kiruhura district,Western Uganda, Africa. The community comprises of both cattle keepers and subsisitence agriculturalists. It is often affected by long droughts and this results in food scarcity and increased poverty. The most affected are women and children since the women are a major pillar in all homes. the children's attendance to schools is equally affected.
The project is aimed at encouraging the first 80 families to grow more food than they currently do. These families will be requested to avail and prepare a minimum of one acre gardens and also prepare to plant at least 30 tree seedlings along their pieces of land. The families will also provide some items like sand. In turn the Project will provide them with seedlings. The project will also provide them with sufficient materials and labour to build GRANNARIES.
This phase is expected to continue for two to three years and it is hoped that by that time all stakeholders will have built capacity to have surplus for sale. Phase II of the project will now focus on the marketing of their produce from the participating families and any other upcoming families. This will focus on physical development of the local markets (popularly referred to as ebikomera).
