Rotary Club of Bombay Powai plans to put up a Public toilet facility in one of the slum areas near Powai, Mumbai These slum dwellers do not have toilet facility
Rotary club of Bombay Powai has already the necessary experience of putting up such a toilet facility earlier
About half of India's 120 crore people do not have toilets in their homes. Two-thirds of India's rural population defecates in the open.
The lack of proper sanitation is directly linked to spreading of diseases such as cholera and typhus. Diarrheal diseases are the second leading cause of death in India- approximately 2000 children die every day from contaminated water supplies and improper sanitation.
In addition to causing diseases, the lack of toilets results in many issues that specifically pertain to women in India. It causes girls in 12-18 years age to miss average 5 days of school in a month.
In urban areas such as Mumbai ,more than half of its population lives in slums which do not have sanitation facilities. The immediate solution is to construct more public toilets in such areas. Public toilets constructed with good quality material and maintained by professional organizations provide benefit for decades not only to the user community but also to the neighborhood due to clean environment.
The club is tied up with Sulabh International, a social service organisation for guidance and coordination. They will also maintain the facility after completion
Once the funds are tied up the project will be completed in 8 months
The estimated cost of the Project is $ 50000
