Project Description

Region: Central America

Country: Nicaragua

Location: Jinotega

Total Budget: $58,800

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Maternal and child health

The purpose of this project is to provide medical transportation out of the remotest part of the jungles in Reserva Bosawas, Jinotega, Wiwili and surrounding areas, along three rivers and back to civilization for those children and mothers needing immediate and long-term medical attention for parasites, malaria, bacterial infections and other Neglected Tropical Diseases, whereas without this medical/surgical intervention, they would surely die. This transportation could also potentially help many other children who require surgical care for cleft lips and palates, club feet, burns, and other medical issues.

This grant will fund the purchase of a $51,000 4x4 Landcruiser, converted to an ambulance and a $7,800 Canoe with a 7,000 pound capacity, equipped with a 40 hp motor. The Municipality of San Jose de Bocay will operate and maintain the equipment.

There will be scheduled free medical transportation trips by the canoe along pre-set routes on the three rivers (Bocay, Coco and Lakus)with subsequent land transportation via the ambulance to one of three hospitals (Jinotega, Leon or Managua)dependent on the medical evaluations provided by the medical staff at the Interior Ministry of Health in San Jose de Bocay.
