Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Ghana

Location: Nalerigu

Total Budget: $73,362

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

This project is now complete, and we are in the process of submitting the Final Report to The Rotary Foundation.

Rotary Club of Tamale, Ghana and the Rotary Club of Brandywine Naamans, Wilmington, DE seek US$73,361.00 to construct 150 Microflush Toilets in households and 2 community borehole water wells for the people of Nalerigu, a farming community with a population of more than 4,000 in the East Mamprusi District of the Northern Region of Ghana.

Fundraising activities are almost complete. We expect to start construction the first of calendar year 2015 with completion by July 2015. We shall apply for a Global Grant from The Rotary Foundation and request $20000 to match the District Global funds, which leaves us with the need for an additional $300. One project partner is needed for the $300.

Naleirigu faces serious sanitation challenges. People defecate at any open places. According to WaterAid, Ghana, a non-governmental organization in water, sanitation and hygiene, "Over eight in ten women in Ghana have no access to a safe toilet. Poor hygiene has serious implications on health. Every year 3,600 mothers in Ghana lose a child to diarrheal diseases caused by a lack of adequate sanitation and clean water. Currently around 2,000 children die every day from diseases caused by dirty water and poor sanitation.

The relatively new Rural Poor Flush Toilet (RPFT) will be installed in 150 households. It was introduced in 2012 and was developed by the Ghana Sustainable Aid Project (GSAP).

It uses locally based relatively economical materials which serve the same use and this makes the toilet also affordable to the local community members with low income levels. It is a living system with an aerobic digester that utilizes the latest research findings on vermiculture composting enhanced by other local organisms readily found in our environment. The micro flush valve isolates waste from space eliminating odors and flies that flushes in just 150cc of water (1 cup) which comes from washing of hands.

This project will improve the sanitation condition of more than 1,500 people for the toilets and 4,000 people from the wells in the community, thereafter making the environment clean of the pollution by the human excreta. Cholera and other environmentally friendly diseases will be minimized.

Each household will be required to dig their own manhole (septic tank) which cost not more than one hundred and twenty dollars ($120.00) in monetary terms as it is not too deep as compared to the usual manhole as their contribution to the project. The funds will be used for the construction of the boreholes and the toilets.

For the boreholes, the community has agreed to contribute into the its maintenance by paying for the water each time they fetch the water. An amount of ten Ghanaian pesewas (GHS0.10) for a bucket of water-34ltrs was agreed by them.

Tamale Rotarians will undertake sensitization talks with all beneficiary households and the communities with the hand dug wells and will be actively involved in the implementation of the project. They will train households in the proper use of the new Microflush toilets and oversee the construction of the two borehole wells. Meetings with the community council that will collect fees for water usage will be held to train them on proper usage and maintenance of the new wells.

Namaans Rotary Club project team member will visit Nalerigu shortly after the beginning of the project along with the Tamale project team members to confirm that the contractors are delivering what has been agreed to and that the households and community leaders are participating in the required training. A Brandywine Naamans project team member will also visit Nalerigu with the Tamale project team members at the completion of the project to confirm our objectives have been met and to celebrate the project's completion with the people of Nalerigu

Both clubs will be respnsible for project update reports, financial accountabilty reports on how the funds are being dispersed and submitting the final report to The Rotary Foundation and to the partners in the project.
