Project Description

Region: Asia

Country: Pakistan

Location: Khairpur

Total Budget: $30,000

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

The mortality rate for children under-five in Pakistan is 101 deaths per 1000 children. Water and sanitation related diseases are responsible for 60% of the total number of child mortality cases in Pakistan, with diarrhea diseases estimated at killing over 200,000 under-five years' children, every year. Unsafe drinking water is shown to lead to poverty through time spent by women and girls to fetch 'drinkable' water from long distances. The combination of unsafe water consumption and poor hygiene practices causes hardship due to resultant high costing treatments for water borne illnesses, decreased working days, and also contribute to lowering of educational achievement due to reduced school attendance by children. Sanitation is the hygiene means of preventing human contact from the hazards of wastes to promote health. In Sindh Province the state of sanitation and hygiene awareness is very limited according to recent survey reports about 18.70 million people (43 %) lack access to improved sanitation facilities, 16.93 million in rural areas and 1.77 million in urban areas are deprived from sanitation facilities.

Only 25 % populations excluding big cities Karachi, Hyderabad have access to sanitation facilities. The same condition prevailing in the Khairpur District. Most of the schools are without sanitation and safe drinking water facilities. The situation is worst in the city and rural area of drinking water. The proposed area is located in Union council Shah Latif called Banaras Colony having population of more then 15000 and about 2142 households covering neighboring area of Nizamani Mohallah, Banaras Extension colony and mill Colony etc.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
