Project Description

Region: Eastern Europe

Country: Kosovo

Location: 14 villages, Kosovo

Total Budget: $72,825

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

A survey of communities in Kosovo done by Rotary Club of Prishtina International (RCPI) members in 2012 found almost 300 villages with inadequate WASH facilities in their schools, including 68 with no water or toilet facilities at all. The impact on children is enormous, especially on girls who are often required to stay at home to assist with carrying and boiling of water, or choose to stay at home rather than be educated in schools with inadequate sanitation facilities. Once a school has a safe water supply, children and faculty will be able to work better, and as a bonus, students will be able to carry home clean water each day.

We have selected fourteen (14) schools for installation of a water supply (or in three instances, a sanitation sewer), and beginning an ongoing hygiene education program. This is a first step towards supplying safe water in each village, and ensuring that the children have healthy conditions in which to learn. The fourteen schools were selected from the 68 schools identified initially as having the greatest need. Approx. 6,000 students and faculty will be served by this project.

RCPI (the Host Club) and two international sponsor Rotary Clubs have successfully implemented 13 school water projects in the most needy of the schools over the last three years. In each case the school administration, the local village officials and the parents were actively involved in the planning. This project will extend the work that has already begun to 14 additional schools targeted by this proposal. The Prishtina Club has extended their commitment to all of these schools (the original 13 and the proposed 14 more) to provide a full WASH program which will ensure sustainability. Members of each school's administration are actively engaged with members of the Host Club in defining and refining the scope of the project and in ensuring the post installation hygiene teaching goals and maintenance programs will be supported. Through the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of Kosovo, each school has committed funds to do this project.

Approximately June 25, 2015, the funding for this project was delivered by TRF to the bank designated by the Prishtina International Rotary Club. Needless to say, this was wonderful news for all connected with the project. At the present time, the Prishtina club is finalizing the timing with the first group of school. As soon as that has been determined, we will provide you with an update.

After the summer vacation lull in Kosovo, our Rotary partners have been hard at work. They have already completed the installation of the first sanitary waste facility at the school in Drenas, Kosovo. Check this site for a picture of the team of 4 engineers (and also Rotary members) who were on site to give formal approval of the installation.

11-Jan-16

We worked hard in Kosovo before winter fell, completing 8 projects, 6 with a water supply and 2 with sanitation. Now we must wait until spring to continue.

Meanwhile our Rotary team is working with public officials to get necessary participation and approvals and complete the engineering on additional schools. In addition to our requirement of 25% local participation, the government has matched our funds with 25% from the national budget. This will enable us to help more schools than originally planned.

As we have been able to do 15 schools with more than 9,700 students to date within the first year of implementation, we are contacting and negotiating with what we expect to be another 15 schools to use the balance of the grant as we have about half the money left from the Global Grant. More than 300 schools in Kosovo remain without safe water for the children to drink!

The WASH project in Ponesh, municipality of Gjilan is finished. We drilled a well for the school to provide water. This school is half Serbian and half Albanian students.

Another WASH project is in Kaqanik called "Skenderbeu", with more than 500 students. This school needs its sewer with the town sewer line.

The complete and final bank statement for this project is now uploaded as well as the brochure used in the schools for training in water use, conservation and hygiene.

16-Nov-18

The final WASH report booklet has been downloaded. This covers all WASH projects from the beginning in 2011 before the Global Grant through the final project #38 which was the last one funded by the GG. Please note that this project was extended to 22 GG funded projects -- 8 more than the originally planned 14. This was possible by cost savings but most importantly by local municipality participation of at least 25% on each project. A few smaller schools the local participation was 50% stretching the grant funds far beyond the original hopes.

16-Nov-18

by John Chesnut

Photos and descriptions of each project are best seen in the final WASH report booklet uploaded in the documents section starting from project #16. Those NOT noted as "Funded by GG" were funded by other means.

18-Mar-19

by John Chesnut

This project is completed and closed by the Rotary Foundation. Please see the Documents tab for the WASH Final Report 2011-2017 that includes many more schools than the original goal of 14. This was accomplished through matching funds and high levels of local commitment and participation.
