Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Swaziland

Location: Mbabane

Total Budget: $32,000

Area of Focus: Community economic development

This project is to provide solar lighting for homes with no electricity. Currently families in Africa and around the world burn paraffin candles that present a fire hazard and emit dangerous fumes. One solar candle can provide light for a room for up to 8 hours on a single charge that takes just 6 hours. It is light to read by, work by and live by. The cost of each unit is less than $25 USD.

The plan is to partner with Rotary District 9400 to identify recipients and distribute the candles. It is anticipated that each family pay a small percentage of the cost as they are able.

Our goal is to deliver 1280 solar candles by the end of this year in celebration of the Rotary theme "Light Up Rotary." The maximum cost would be $32000 USD.
