Project Description

Region: Middle East

Country: Palestine

Location: Gaza

Total Budget: $100,000

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

The Palestinian Water Authority stated that the water distribution network in Gaza had suffered $34.4 million worth of damage as a result of the recent conflict over the last five weeks, including dozens of destroyed facilities.

The water authority said in a statement that 11 water wells had been completely destroyed and 15 partially destroyed in the assault, while 17 kilometers of water supply networks were completely destroyed and another 29 partially destroyed.

Furthermore 5 water containers were completely destroyed while 11 water containers were partially or severely damaged, while two desalination units were completely destroyed, and four were partially damaged.

In addition, more than seven kilometers of sewage networks were completely destroyed and more than 10 kilometers partially destroyed, while 12 pumping sewage stations were severely damaged and four waste-water treatment stations were partially destroyed.

The water network would require some $32.6 million worth of emergency supplies to cover the Strip's water needs for the next six months.

UN agencies on the ground groups affected population into three broad caseloads:

A. Population not displaced but facing problems with access to water supply

B. Displaced population in IDP shelters (UNRWA, governmental and informal)

C. Displaced population moving between home and shelters.

Category A: addressed so far mainly through repairs and infrastructure related activities. According to service providers 50% of the network is under control and receive water every 5 days.

Category B: mainly covered by UNRWA, supported by OGB with planned support from ICRC and potentially other actors. Water supply according to SHERE standards

Category C: communities and neighbourhoods east of Salah Ed Deen road (The main Highway Artery cutting Gaza into two halves).

This project will address the needs of Category C population by supplying Water Tanks that will hold and distribute the daily needed clean water.

The project will supply 300 large water tanks ( each of 1000 liters) to act as main water supply center in each neighbourhood for a cost of $60,000.

The project will supply 3000 JerryCans to the local families so they can carry their daily needs for a cost of $20,000.

The project will supply as well Hygiene kits including Chlorine tablets for the cost of $10,000.

The project will include Hygiene promotion and Information Seminars for the cost of $10,000

Making a total project of $100,000.
