Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Uganda

Location: Mbarara

Total Budget: $68,000

Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy, Community economic development

1. NEEDS ASSESSMENT OF THE PROJECT

The majority of the population in this ward lives in a rural belt where there is no electric power. This has affected the life of the villagers in more ways than one.

• Children are not able to study in the evening and late into the night.

• Women are not able to cook food properly or have to cook it early to beat the dark night where they are unable to see.

• Solar lamps will reduce or eliminate the expenditure in purchasing kerosene to light up kerosene lamps which they are currently using.

• Use of kerosene lamps also makes the environment extremely unsafe.

2. OBJECTIVE

To make the life of the villagers safe and comfortable. Solar lamps will be delivered to areas where there is no power at all. This project is unique because not only does it aid in the safety of homes, but also helps in promoting studies for the school children. Solar lamps promote energy preservation as solar technology is being used. There is plenty of sunshine to charge these lamps by virtue of being in tropical areas. These lamps when charged can also charge mobile phones. All the above enhance environmental conservation.

3. COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION

Having been guided by the club, the Community leaders will help in the sensitization about proper use of these lamps. The leaders will also propagate the environmental benefits of non-conventional energy resources.

4. CLUB CONTRIBUTION

Members of the club will distribute and monitor the usage of the solar lamps to the 2 villages where the lamps will have been distributed.
