Obaatan Pa Women's hospital is a new hospital providing women's health care to women from varied socioeconomic backgrounds in Accra. It has a novel approach in providing health care in a private setting to women with charges based on a sliding scale method. The grant addresses both maternal health and infant mortality.
As in many developing countries, there is a dearth of affordable women's health facilities. The ones accessible to the general public are not clean, welcoming or of particularly high standard. We hope to maintain a high standard to attract enough paying patients to allow us to support the facility, and care for those unable to pay in full, and even donate some free care.
The use of international volunteers for some nursing training and care, donation of services by one 0.5FTE physician will help ensure both the standard of care, and reduce costs. Donations of re-useable hospital supplies and equipment from the United states help to reduce costs.
The support from local companies for supplies, for example intravenous fluids have been donated by a local company, help to reduce overall costs.
The local political and community leaders as well as churches and a mosque have been contacted and are all in support. The Ministry of Health has been supportive in giving permits for limited duties & taxes on this non-profit facility to help minimize costs given the awareness of the lack of quality women's health care facilities in the country.
Project funds are being sought to purchase a general service vehicle for purchasing heavy supplies (oxygen, Diesel), and to help move staff and reduce their transport costs. Funding is also being requested for a Power inverter for use during the frequent and foreseeably continuing power cuts experienced in Ghana. Club members are involved as board members in both the host club and international club, and help to finance the Well-woman screening days.
